But the country had a considerable economic value. 1) We have at Pechelbronn, in Alsace, the only important oil-well in all Germany. ... 2) In Upper-Alsace there are rich potash deposits. If this region belonged to France, the German potash monopoly, which renders all foreign lands, especially North America, tributary to our country, would be lost. . . 3) . . . Terror strikes us when we think what would have happened to us in the present war if we had not had the Lorraine iron fields in our possession. . . ."
