About the Book

How effective are interventions in primary care in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease? Where should resources be invested for the greater benefit? This report explores the role of the primary care team in the context of national health policy. Health promotion is an essential part of primary care and the report asks how the interventions can be made most effective. It examines the evidence on different types of intervention in primary care and models of behaviour change; considers the lessons learnt from two major UK intervention studies carried out in the 1990s; assesses the implication for health policy and for primary care practice; and explores areas for future research. With contributions from experts in the field of prevention, and critiques by leading professional organizations, the report makes an important contribution to the debate on effective strategies to reduce the UK's high rates of coronary heart disease.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 The way forward - summary and conclusions. Part 2 Prevention in primary care - two studies: the OXCHECK study, Dr Godfrey Fowler; the British Family Heart Study, Professor David Wood. Part 3 Coronary heart disease prevention in primary care: the evidence for a population approach to interventions in primary care, Professor Klim McPherson; health-related behaviour change, Professor Marie Johnston; the evidence for interventions in "high-risk" populations in primary care, Professor Desmond Julian; introducing screening programmes in primary care, Fedelma Winkler; implications for the future - a personal view, Dr Alistair Cameron.
